Yoga means different things to different people. There are a variety of styles of yoga. Find what you need, not what you want.
Therapeutic Yoga
Online classes offered weekly: attend live or receive the recording
pre-recorded purchase option
INSTRUCTOR:
Dr. Melissa Kerr, ERYT, YACEP, PT, DPT
An all levels class that is particularly effective for those recovering from or living with injury or illness. Different from other styles such as yin or restorative, this is a hatha-based hybrid class with a fusion of physiotherapy knowledge in pathology with the holistic benefits of yoga. Classes may use props such as blocks, blankets, fascial rounds (tennis balls, lacrosse balls, any ‘round’ ball slightly smaller than the size of your fist), straps, and sometimes even a folding chair. At the beginning of each class, the props recommended for the class will be announced, and alternative options will be provided. Props are suggested, not required.
This is beginner-friendly, but individuals that are new to yoga may need to watch the poses, perform the poses, rewind and watch again. The goal of yoga is not to force yourself into a shape, but rather take your time understanding how your body responds to movement and determine if you need to make adjustments. Yoga will look and feel different for each person. Remember to find what works for you and what your body needs. Yoga should not create pain. If you find something painful or alarming, the goal is to work within the realm of temporary, tolerable discomfort.
Each therapeutic yoga class is slightly different. A class may focus one session on a particular body parts more than others (i.e. neck, low back, hips), but all classes will emphasize optimizing alignment and offering alternative options as needed. Every class will include breath work, physical postures, and meditation.
PLEASE KNOW that classes are recorded live on Tuesdays from 8:30 am to 9:30 am. You do not need to be present for the live class as a recording will be emailed to you. Once you receive your recording, you can download and save the class to your device to keep. You will have ~2 weeks to download the class before it is no longer accessible.
